Harvard Business School professor Amy Edmondson coined the term Psychological Safety which is the belief that one can speak up and speak out without risk of punishment or humiliation. After researching medication errors in hospitals, what Dr. Edmondson found was that teams with the fewest errors weren’t the ones with the most experience or highest standards but instead were the teams that had open environments where they actively talked about mistakes and worked together to find new ways to reduce them. These were “psychologically safe” environments.
